Hundreds of activists have volunteered as stewards to make sure demos don't clash with the Londonn Marathon ⚠️ But with at least 30,000 people expected to attend, Extinction Rebellion warns it might not be possible to contain every incident

The activist group has said it has no plans to disrupt the marathon and discouraged its members from disturbing the event but pointed out that it did not know what would happen on the day. More than 40,000 runners will take part in the 26.2-mile run.

Hundreds of activists within the group have volunteered as stewards to make sure the demo does not clash with the race this Sunday, but with at least 30,000 people expected to attend, Extinction Rebellion has warned that it might not be possible to contain every incident. “We have said that we have no intention of disrupting protests but we obviously don’t know what is going to happen. We’ve said this before and it’s been taken out of context to mean that we are enabling protests. We’ve made clear that doing so would not be acceptable.

“There’s obviously a lot of anger directed towards the Government at the moment, with thousands of people on strike across different sectors. We want as many people as possible to be involved in politics and for citizens to have a voice. This is about finding common ground.” London Marathon organisers confirmed that they had spoken with Extinction Rebellion and been assured that the group was in support of the event taking place.
