A number of bars have been closed as authorities fear contaminated alcohol could be widespread on the island
Authorities on the Greek island of Corfu are investigating whether contaminated alcohol played a part in the death of a 22-year-old police officer from Surrey. Hannah Emily Byrne died after falling several metres and suffering serious head injuries in Kavos.
"Had it been illicitly tampered with? Was she so intoxicated because [illegal] methanol was in the alcoholic drinks she had consumed? The answer lies in the toxicology tests that will be carried out." Corfu's police chief Spyridon Skolarikis has instructed officers to raid bars amid fears of the extent of adulterated alcohol being served. 28 bars have already closed.
