Climate change could be the reason for an increase in weeds in our pools, ponds, canals and rivers
Warmer and wetter summers could make the fight to stop canals from being choked by invasive weeds even more challenging, the Canal and River Trust warns.
Physically removing them is the quickest method and Canal and River Trust teams, contractors and volunteers will launch fleets of boats to scoop the weeds out of the water. The North West is a particular area of concern and £109,000 will be invested to remove the aquatic weeds, such as floating pennywort.
Warmer summers create a vibrant space for the weeds, with the growing months increasing and ponds, canals, rivers and pools turning a bright shade of green. This then forms a mat across the surface of the water and litter is accumulated which can make some species mistake it for grass.
