Claire lost three members of her family to the same type of brain tumour, at odds of one in a billion InYourArea_UK braintumourrsch edingburgh EastKilbride

FIGHTING FOR CHANGE: Claire, pictured here with her husband Danny, will lead an iconic fundraising event for the charity

Despite her family’s recent loss, Claire will lead an iconic fundraising event for the charity Brain Tumour Research. The Walk of Hope at Chatelherault Country Park in Hamilton on Saturday, September 30, will raise vital funds to help find a cure for the disease, and she is calling on others to join her.Claire, 55, who hails from Wishaw but lives in Edinburgh, said: “have absolutely devastated our family, they are so unpredictable and can affect anyone at any age.

Shockingly, while Angie received treatment, her and Claire’s mum Margaret also discovered she had the same type of tumour. In September 2007, Margaret went to University Hospital Wishaw thinking she had suffered a mini stroke, she was discharged, but then suddenly became unable to hold a conversation. An MRI scan in November revealed two brain tumours.

“Mum had one week of radiotherapy but that was it because they didn’t think she would have been able to manage any more treatment. Mum died on October 1, 2008, just a year after being diagnosed.” He was placed on end-of-life care and died at Kilbryde Hospice. Claire said: “Max was extremely strong and upbeat throughout his illness, he faced his diagnosis head on fighting with courage, determination and dignity way beyond his years until the very end.

“Brain tumours kill more children and adults under the age of 40 than any other cancer yet, historically just one per cent of the national spend on cancer research has been allocated to this devastating disease.”
