Taking vitamin D supplements may help prevent dementia, especially in women, a large-scale study by UK and Canadian researchers suggests PMGallagher1 reports:

UK and Canadian researchers said their findings give ‘key insights’ into groups who might be specifically targeted for vitamin D supplementation

Scientists analysed a group of 12,388 people in the US National Alzheimer’s Coordinating Centre, 37 per cent of whom took the supplements. All participants had an average age of 71 and were dementia-free when they signed up with the centre. As well as discovering those who took the supplements were more likely to be healthier for longer, the research team at the universities of Calgary and Exeter also found 40 per cent fewer dementia diagnoses in the group who took supplements. The study, published in, found evidence that the sooner the supplements are taken the better.
