‘It is almost impossible to wrap our minds around the fact that a six-year-old brought a loaded handgun to school and shot a teacher; however, this is exactly what our community is grappling with’, the mayor of Newport News, VirginiasaidThe teacher shot by a six-year-old pupil and taken to hospital is showing signs of improvement authorities say.during a classroom altercation with a boy, six, on Friday – in the city of Newport News, Virginia.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the teacher and her family, and we are hopeful that she will recover from this ordeal. “This is still an active investigation, and the Newport News Police Department is working diligently to get an answer to the question we are all asking – how did this happen? “We are also working to ensure the child receives the supports and services he needs as we continue to process what took place.”
Ms Zwerner graduated from Virginia’s James Madison University in 2020. A statement from its president said they were “deeply saddened by the tragic incident”.

Newport News Mayor Phillip Jones said Saturday that the teacher’s condition is “trending in a positive direction” as she remains hospitalized. Authorities say the boy shot and wounded the teacher in a first-grade classroom on Friday at Richneck Elementary School. Police Chief Steve Drew said the shooting was not accidental and was part of an altercation. No students were injured. Jones declined to release additional details about what led to the altercation. He also would not comment on how the boy got access to the gun or who owns the weapon.
