The officer suffered life-changing injuries in the line of duty
Villagers have expressed their sadness after a police officer was seriously injured after being hit by a train near Newark. A Nottinghamshire Police officer remains in a serious condition at Queen's Medical Centre after he was hit by a train while attempting to save a distressed man on the railway lines in Balderton.
"It must have been around half past seven, maybe a little bit before then. There were jots lots of police and I saw two ambulances and then there was the quick respond units." Balderton resident Gail Brammer, who works as a baker at Piccolo's espresso bar in Worksop, said: "At first we heard that it was children and then we heard this morning that it was a man that they were concerned about. I went out and asked the police man this morning but he said he couldn't comment."
She said that she hopes the man gets the help he needs, and wished "the poor policeman" well. Adding: "I hope he's OK." In a statement, BTP said: “Officers attended alongside paramedics, where one man was found to have sustained non-life-threatening electrocution injuries, and another man, a Nottinghamshire police officer, had sustained life-changing injuries and sadly remains in a critical condition. Both were taken to hospital where they remain.
