SNP MP Owen Thompson said the current system is 'a glaring injustice and a slap in the face' to those who have fought for their country
An SNP MP has called for the end to a "loophole" which seens veterans and their families losing thousands of pounds in benefits.
Some 12,000 veterans and their families in Scotland receive compensation in relation to their service in the armed forces. The "loophole" affects both local and nationally administered benefits. “And this is all due to a loophole. Some of these veterans are pensioners and they are losing out on thousands.
“The covenant pledges that those who serve or have served in the armed forces and their families are treated fairly and are not penalised for their service. Pension credit does not consider any compensation awarded by a court, such as personal injury, as income. Poppyscotland urged Scottish local authorities to use their powers to ensure military compensation is never treated as income in means tests for locally administered benefits.
