Nottingham City Council says it is spending £240,000 over the next two years to boost vaccine rates

People who have missed out on a meningitis jab have been told that getting one should be an "urgent" priority as figures show Nottingham has one of the lowest rates in the East Midlands. The MenACWY vaccine is routinely offered to people in school years 9 and 10, but anyone who has missed out can still get a free jab with their GP until they turn 25.

Data from the UK Health Security Agency shows that the vaccination rate among year 9 pupils in Nottingham is 35.3 percent, the lowest rate in the East Midlands. The region's next lowest rate is in Leicester, where the uptake is 39.5 percent. Hartlepool had the lowest vaccination rate in England for areas that offer the jab to Year 9 children, with just 34.2 percent being vaccinated. That is in stark contrast with Hertfordshire, which had the highest vaccination rate at 93.3 percent.Dr Shamez Ladhani, Consultant Epidemiologist at UKHSA, said: "Every year we see new and returning students get seriously ill, with some tragically dying, from what are preventable diseases.

"If you've missed out on your meningitis , HPV or MMR jabs then contacting your GP for the vaccine should be top of your list of urgent things to do before starting college or university." In August 2015, a MenACWY catch-up programme began for all children aged 14 to 18 years and those aged under 25 years attending university for the first time.

The latest figures come after Nottingham City Council announced it was spending £240,000 over the next two years to boost vaccination rates in primary and nursery-age children. The authority said that the slight decrease in vaccination rates over the last decade could pose a "serious threat to children and the wider community."
