Craft beer's looming bubble burst - and why Lancashire says loyalty can beat any bust
Lancashire is home to a number of brilliant craft breweries. Throughout the pandemic, many predicted the lockdowns would see the pub and bar industry decline to a position where it may not ever truly recover.
Carbon dioxide costs at Farm Yard Brew Co are said to have gone up 100% and cans going up between 50% and 80%. They raised their prices slightly in January and 'tried to ride it out' but says it 'won't be long' until prices go up again across the board. Danny says an evening out at Farm Yard is 'cheaper than going into your local town or city'. As we head into the winter when energy bills are set to soar once again, Danny said the team will be relying on their business structure to make it through. He explained that Farm Yard is set up so that everything they do is reinvested back into the business. They sell to retail outlets, host a tap room, sell online, host events and work with a range people on products.
"I don't think it's so much competing for the market. The craft beer industry on the small scale, everyone sort of helps each other out. When people say the craft beer industry, it comes along with guys who have partially sold out, I do feel it is the big guys still against the smaller guys. The smaller guys do try and stick together, but obviously the bigger guys can make the beer cheap, so it's going to be a tough one.
