Ukraine’s Zaporizhia nuclear power plant, the largest of its kind in Europe, has lost its last remaining external power source following renewed shelling and is relying on emergency diesel generators to stay functional.

Even though Zaporizhzhia’s six reactors are shut down the nuclear fuel in them still needs cooling to prevent a nuclear meltdown. This requires a constant supply of electricity.

Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has urged both sides to set up a protective zone around the plant to reduce the risk of an accidental nuclear disaster The Zaporizhia plant has faced heavy shelling since the war began, with Ukraine accusing the Russians of using the occupied plant as a base to conduct attacks on the nearby city
