Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has announced he plans to replace defence minister Oleksii Reznikov with Rustem Umerov.

His departure, and replacement with Rustem Umerov, represents a big shake-up of the department, but why has it happened now, mid-way through Ukraine's counteroffensive? Though he was not personally involved in the food contract, some Ukrainian commentators said he should take political responsibility.

Mr Umerov, 41, is a member of the opposition Holos party and has held the position of the Head of Ukraine's State Property Fund since September 2022. Since December 2020, Umerov has taken on the role of co-chairing the Crimea Platform diplomatic initiative. More pictures have emerged from Bakhmut in the Donetsk region from today, the site of fierce battles with Russian forces.
