Manpower is likely to be a more significant factor than which side controls any town or village, says Mykola Bielieskov, an adviser to Ukraine’s military leadership through the National Institute of Strategic Studies think-tank.Mr Bielieskov acknowledged the breach of Russian defensive lines but noted that several more lines remain, although it is unclear how strongly defended these are.
The strategist added that it was unclear to what extent Ukraine’s attritional approach had succeeded in weakening Russian defences but said that “Russia has thrown most forces in the first line” – potentially leaving deeper defences undermanned.
