Fears of a terror attack at Kabul’s international airport were raised last night in a blow to thousands of people’s efforts to flee Afghanistan.
The RAF still needs to airlift out almost 2,000 Afghan interpreters and other staff who have worked for British forces. Eligible Afghans hoping to seek asylum in the UK would be better off now heading for Afghanistan’s border and trying to make their way to a third country, defence secretary Ben Wallace is understood to have told MPs.
The Ministry of Defence said 11,474 people have been evacuated to Britain since the Taliban returned to power earlier this month, including nearly 7,000 Afghans.
