The organisers of the Ironman event have issued a statement following the tragedy

Two men who died during the Ironman triathlon in Co Cork on Sunday have been named as a Canadian accountant and a man originally from Co Meath.

The Canadian who died has been named locally as 64-year-old Ivan Chittenden, an accountant from Toronto, who was taking part in the event with friends, reports the Irish Mirror.The second man who lost his life was Brendan Wall, aged in his 40s, who is originally from Co Meath but was living in Solihull in the UK.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm the death of two race participants at the IRONMAN 70.3 Ireland, Cork 2023.
