Two emergency-use coal generators have been put on standby amid the cold weather.

Parts of Britain have already come to a standstill overnight because of the heavy snowfall, and now there are concerns energy supplies could run out. National Grid Electricity System Operator said the ‘winter contingency coal units’ will be available if required today as temperatures dipped below zero and demand soars.A statement on Twitter said: ‘We have issued a notification to warm two winter contingency coal units.‘This notification is not confirmation that these units will be used on Monday, but that they will be available to the ESO, if required.
