Truss needs to survive 78 more days to avoid becoming Britain's shortest-serving PM ➡️ As pressure builds from across her backbenches, Liz Truss has been tipped by some to be out of office within days or, by many more, by end of this year
Prime Minister Liz Truss is joined on the front bench by her new chancellor Jeremy Hunt as she fights to save her job Liz Truss has to survive as prime minister until 3 January next year in order to avoid becoming the UK’s shortest-serving resident of No 10 Downing Street.
George Canning held various senior Cabinet positions under numerous prime ministers, including two terms as foreign secretary, before becoming prime minister in April 1827. Many believe today’s chaos in the Conservative Party is as bad as it gets, but it’s nothing like the problems that Portland had to cope with in his administration.
Portland secretly agreed to make this change, but after Castlereagh discovered the deal in September 1809, he did not send a letter to the 1922 Committee. He challenged Canning to a duel. Canning accepted the challenge, and it was fought on 21 September 1809 on Putney Heath. Canning, who had never before fired a pistol, widely missed his mark. Castlereagh, who was regarded as one of the best shots of his day, wounded his opponent in the thigh.
After Lord Liverpool’s resignation on 12 April 1827, Canning finally got the top job, but died in office just 119 days later on 8 August. Polling day would then be expected to take place 25 days later, and can be held no later than Friday 24 January 2025. Since 1935 elections have typically been held on a Thursday, though this is not a hard-and-fast rule.
