Trespassing could not only improve the environment, it could make us healthier too 🔵 We could save the NHS billions if more people were able to get out into nature ✍️ CarolineLucas for ipaperviews
, all demonstrate that people care deeply about protecting our natural environment – and they’re proactive in keeping it safe and clean.
Expanding the right to roam isn’t just about looking after nature – it’s about looking after ourselves, too. Last year, the Government set up the Agnew Review to look into supporting people access and engage with nature – but rather than being commissioned by Defra, the environment department, it was commissioned by the Treasury. This was no accident – they recognised that we could, because it would have such a positive impact on people’s mental and physical health.
Fortunately, we’re not going out on a limb here and taking a gamble on some futuristic, unknown policy idea. We have a blueprint to work off from a very close neighbour – in Scotland. Access in Scotland hasn’t led to the negative consequences that many might have reasonably feared at the time. Crucially, it made provision for determining what constituted a responsible exercise of access rights, using the Access Code: to respect the interests of others; to care for the environment; and to take responsibility for your own actions. And it asked the same of land managers – to act responsibly towards those legitimately exercising their access rights.
