A train has derailed near Carlisle and crashed into a river with major disruption to the rail network expected to continue throughout the day.
Highways engineers are at the scene working with firefighters to assess any damage to the bridge as well as carrying out a full area search. Images from the scene show the train derailed over the River Petteril with numerous carriages in the water basin. "Train services running through this station will be cancelled or delayed by up to 45 minutes. Disruption is expected until the end of the day."
"It happened in the area of the Petteril Bridge junction, off London Road, before 9.30pm tonight . People are asked to stay away from this area while emergency workers deal with the incident."
