Harley Whittle was sadly found by his mum after he didn't return home from seeing friends

There was no evidence to suggest a 'loving' 15-year-old found dead by his mum intended to end his own life, a coroner has ruled.

Harley was 'active, fun' boy, school says The inquest heard that Harley was in the process of being assessed for ADHD as he struggled to concentrate in school but that in the weeks before his death he had ‘turned a corner’. In January this year teachers and his mum, Pippa, noticed some scars on his forearm which he said had come from the lead cutting him while he was walking the dog.

Mr Stewart told the court that children were encouraged to come to staff to talk about any issues they had, but that Harley did not do this. He said that his friends only came forward about conversations they had had with him where he disclosed he may have tried to take his own life before after his death. They added they did not believe he would do anything further that may harm himself. “He liked to help people,” Mr Stewart added.

Statements read out in court from some of his friends by the coroner in which they described the evening they had spent together before Harley was found dead. They all described him as being “normal” and said he did not seem out of the ordinary whatsoever. One of the friends had had an issue at school that day and Harley was trying to help them feel better. “He was energetic and happy,” one said.

"I am unable to make the finding that he had previously tried to end his life. Both the school and his mum had taken action over the self harm and satisfied themselves there was nothing of concern." She added that any marks that would have shown from a previous attempt on his life - which his friends said he had - would have been noticed and raised by parents or the school.
