National Rail confirmed the tragic incident happened between Southport and Hall Road stations on Tuesday . Merseyrail first started reporting disruption between Moorfields and Formby just before 4pm following an "incident on the line"
Emergency services, including an air ambulance, were called to the scene and British Transport Police later confirmed that a person died at the scene, despite the best efforts of paramedics and police. No other details regarding the person or their age has yet been confirmed.A spokesperson told the ECHO: "Officers were called to the line near Formby at 3.50pm today following reports of a casualty on the line. Paramedics also attended however sadly a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
An update from Merseyrail said: "Due to an incident on the line near Freshfeild station, services on the Southport and Hunts Cross line will face delays and alterations to service. Some services will start and terminate at Hall Road." A spokesperson from National Rail said: "A person has been hit by a train between Hall Road and Southport. To allow the emergency services to safely carry out their work, all lines are closed.
"As a result, trains are currently unable to run between Hall Road and Southport. This is expected until 6pm."
