Mansfield's planning authority says it considers the "drive to promote healthy eating" when making decisions despite the town having more national fast food outlets than nearly every other part of Nottinghamshire. Although it is the least populated district of the county, Mansfield has the highest number of takeaway chain outlets outside Nottingham.
Gedling, Broxtowe and Rushcliffe all have the joint lowest number of these outlets in Nottinghamshire, with nine being based in each. Speaking about the number of takeaways in Mansfield, its Conservative MP Ben Bradley said: "It's another example of our local decision-making structures and powers not being joined up.
"We are mindful of balancing the need for businesses to thrive with the drive to promote healthy eating, and that is why the council is involved in a wider Nottinghamshire scheme called Healthier Options Takeaway for promoting takeaway establishments with healthier options on the menu." Nottinghamshire County Council data shows 34 businesses in Mansfield are currently part of the HOT scheme. But the small, independently-owned eateries that are part of the HOT programme are up against several international brands in Mansfield such as Taco Bell, Papa John's Pizza and Dunkin' Donuts.
"I know that with takeaways we've obviously got quite a few of the same ones and it's not much, but at least it gives us something." James Wigman, 71, another resident of Mansfield, said: "I don't really have takeaways a lot myself, so it doesn't really bother me much. But I do wish we had more independent cafes in Mansfield than anything, I've seen that there is one opening up in the shopping centre which is nice.
