, as former work and pensions secretary, Chloe Smith, became the latest to announce plans to stand down.
Ms Smith said in a statement on Tuesday that the next election in two years’ time would mark “the right time to step back, for me and my young family”. The former Cabinet minister, who was the youngest member of the Commons when first elected at the age of 27, has seen her hold over her Norwich North seat waver over the past few years.
Ms Smith held a majority of 4,793 at the last general election in 2019, but the figure was as low as 507 in 2017. She would likely lose her seat to Labour at the next general election on current polling.
