In the hours before he formally announced his bid, a supporter told: “It’s beginning to look like Rishi is the frontrunner – but his operation is incredibly discreet.” Other MPs expressed scepticism, pointing out that he was personally responsible for increasing tax and spending after the start of the pandemic. “The problem for Rishi is he has to run against his record,” an MP said.
Mark Spencer, the Leader of the House of Commons, was the first Cabinet minister to pick a side in the leadership race. He told the BBC: “There are no secrets to Rishi Sunak. That’s why I’m supporting him. There are no skeletons in that cupboard.”
