The 1922 Committee, a group of Conservative backbenchers which sets those rules and organises leadership contests, is expected to hold a crunch meeting later on Thursday. Other senior Tories are said to be keen for Ms Truss to stay until October 31 so that the government’s new economic policy can be set out in full before a new leader takes the reins.
