Violet is lucky to belong to a generation of girls whose neurodiversity has been diagnosed. For many years, girls with ASD went undiagnosed and unsupported because of a psychiatric model based only on male presentation. He says Violet is “quite intellectually gifted in some areas and useless in others. She’s got a brain that’s quite loaded up on one side and dysfunctional on the other. She presents as neurotypical when she wants to, but it tires her out.
While wary of being seen to complain about his “lucky, lucky life”, Minchin admits to struggling with “happiness, with my sense of self. I don’t know if that’s the same for everyone. The easiest way to say it is that I have a fragile self-esteem. But it’s worse than that. I’m body dysmorphic, I think. I’m home dysphoric. But I think my job is to model optimism for my children. And I make as many good choices as I can.
In Minchin’s experience, sexual desire is “one of the most powerful feelings in the world. Some people’s sexualities are different but I’m wired so that when I’m in that situation, which I have been, it’s like I’ve been spellbound or poisoned, My brain is screaming, ‘DO THIS! THIS IS ALL YOU WANT TO DO!’ Surely there is a way to unpack that in a self-aware way.”
