No group has been more affected by the pandemic lockdowns than school children. Arguably, they should never have been kept away from the classrooms at all. The risk to them from the virus is minuscule and teachers are no more likely to catch Covid than any other employee. The argument that children, while hardly affected, spread the contagion within families convinced ministers to shut schools yet in other parts of Europe they remained open for longer than here.
