The Reds' midfield has attracted criticism after their first two games of this season, despite summer signing Mason Mount starting both the win over Wolves and Saturday's defeat to Tottenham Hotspur. They have lacked bite and organisation in the engine room. Slotting in alongside Casemiro The most natural role for Gravenberch to slide into at Old Trafford would be the No.8 berth alongside Casemiro. The Brazilian is United's destroyer-in-chief and is unlikely to be dislodged from that position. United, of course, added Mason Mount to their ranks earlier this summer to provide support between both boxes.
Covering for Casemiro Though Gravenberch, who played more than 100 games under Ten Hag at Ajax, is not an out-and-out defensive midfielder, he could slot into the No.6 berth if required. He has the ability to put in a tackle and win possession back for his team before dictating play from deep. Mount pushes forward In the event of Fernandes ever being unavailable, Mount is the most obvious candidate to replace the United captain in the No.10 spot. The England international has spent much of his career operating as a No.10 and is capable of pulling the strings from that area of the team.
