Covid cases have been steadily rising since the end of summer
Health experts are warning of “further increases” in Covid cases in the UK as the weather turns colder.
According to experts, the new strain is no more likely to make people seriously ill than other variants that are currently circulating, and vaccination should provide ongoing protection. There were 15,797 new cases of the disease in England in the week leading up to October 7, according to the latest government figures. This is the equivalent of 27.9 new cases for every 100,000 people in the country.
As of October 8, there were 4,414 patients in hospital testing positive for Covid, according to NHS England. This is a 14% increase on the previous week and marks the highest total since May 4.
