Dozens wept at the end of the service last night for Luke and Grace McSweeney, Zoey Coffey and Nicole Murphy.

Clonmel came to a standstill on Sunday night as thousands of people mounted a heartbreaking vigil for the town’s four lost angels.

“We enter total sadness and desolation, and we're numbed and speechless. For some it's still not hit us that Luke and Grace, Nicole and Zoey have died. It doesn't make sense. Why? Why them? The question we will sadly never get the answer to.”Gardai are still trying to establish what happened in the disaster, but investigators believe Luke lost control of the BMW 320 he was driving – and it then crashed into a wall on the Mountain Road just after 7.30pm on Friday.

"For young lives, so full of possibility, to be cut short in this way is truly devastating and heartbreaking. The whole nation mourns them," Mr Varadkar said. "For the members to arrive and quickly realise that there was three Leaving Cert students and their brother at the scene, and unfortunately all were dead, is a very traumatic scene for everybody," he said.

Bouquets of flowers were left near the scene by locals and students, who were seen comforting each other."This is heartbreaking news on what should have been a day of enormous celebration and joy for the class of 2023," she said. The scene at Mountain Road remains closed to allow for a forensic examination, and Gardai are appealing for witnesses to come forward.
