In what is planned to be his final start before Deshaun Watson returns, Jacoby Brissett wants to seize the opportunity this week. Why he's so eager to face his mentor, Tom Brady.
Next week, the Browns will make what they hope will be their last quarterback change for a long time when Deshaun Watson’s suspension ends and Watson takes over for Jacoby Brissett.
The Browns have won a few important games since, but they’ve only won three of 10 this season. The Bucs have won two straight to get to 5-5 and put themselves atop the NFC South; they last played two weeks ago, when they defeated the Seahawks in Germany. The Browns made the Watson trade in hopes of stopping this vicious cycle. Per terms of his 11-game suspension for multiple violations of the NFL’s personal conduct policy, Watson was allowed to return to practice Nov. 14 and will be eligible to debut next week. The Browns have always planned to immediately make Watson their quarterback after they traded six picks to acquire Watson last March and signed him to a five-year contract worth a record $230 million in full guarantees.
Back in Week 1, Brissett cried after the Browns’ win because he said he knows how difficult it is to win and how he’s rarely been certain about when his next opportunity might come. He now enters another period of uncertainty, but he’s certainly boosted his résumé for potential future employers. • Everybody runs on the Browns, and Kevin Stefanski mentioned this week that the Bucs creating more opportunities for rookie running back Rachaad White seems to have sparked the run game. Leonard Fournette remains the Bucs’ starting running back, but Fournette is doubtful for Sunday with a hip injury. White ran 22 times for 105 yards in the Bucs’ win over the Seahawks in Germany and only has 60 carries all season.
• With Ethan Pocic on injured reserve, Hjalte Froholdt takes over as the Browns’ center. Froholdt missed two days of practice this week due to illness, but he returned Friday and will get the start. The Browns signed veteran center Greg Mancz this week as an emergency option; Mancz spent four seasons with the Texans when Watson was the Texans’ quarterback.
