“I never intended to be political with my wedding dress. I simply – and here is where I think anyone who has got married will relate – wanted to look nice and not fall over,” writes NellFrizzell.

In truth, it never occurred to me that I wouldn’t sew my wedding dress. When my first book came out, I sewed a blue velvet suit out of a pair of secondhand curtains I got for £20 from a local junk shop, and stitched “” across the back. When I spoke at Hay Festival, I wore a 1960s-style trouser and top combination using a length of material I bought from a local scrap project in Oxford for £5. I have made every outfit I have worn to every wedding in my life.

The wedding dress I ended up making from that £4 piece of apricot was pretty simple. By which I mean, I couldn’t quite work out how to put a zip in it and so just didn’t. I had to wriggle in and out of it in the toilets of the Hackney Picturehouse, where I also did my make-up. I made the skirt first – A-line and dropping from my waist.

Making an entire wedding outfit for less than £10 is not, I suppose, the norm in the UK. According to the BBC, the average cost of a wedding here in 2021 was £17,000 and a significant chunk of that will be taken up with the dress. Or gown, I should say. However, after years of lockdowns, a devastating global pandemic and subsequent recession, a cost of living crisis and truly urgent climate emergency, I believe people’s priorities are changing. They need to.

For my mother’s generation and certainly my grandmother’s, making your own wedding dress was absolutely the norm. I inherited my current sewing machine from my great aunt Margaret when she died over 20 years ago – I took it to university, I took it to Berlin, used it to make my son clothes and our new home curtains.

I never intended to be political with my wedding dress. I never expected so many people to take an interest. I simply – and here is where I think anyone who has got married will relate – wanted to look nice and not fall over. Oh and my favourite photo of the day? The one that has now been liked by over 35,000 people? It was taken by my
