What happens when the Prince of England has sex with the first son of the United States? Public scandal and true love, according to this fun, racy, quietly revolutionary queer romance ★★★★ 🖋️ francescasteele
August 10, 2023 5:00 pmwere gay. This is basically the premise of this film, based on the 2019 bestselling novel by Casey McQuiston, which leans heavily on real life similarities to engage its viewers’ sense of familiarity and moral outrage.
Technically we have Prince Henry, not Harry, who openly refers to himself as “the spare” in line to the British throne, and has been traumatised by the recent death of his father. He has a frosty elder brother called Prince Philip, an affable sister called Princess Beatrice and a big secret: he is, he confides, “as gay as a maypole”. Never mind mere inferences of bigotry in real life. This fictional royal family is nakedly homophobic.
So, it’s a tad tricky when His Royal Highness falls into bed with none other than the first son of the United States. Alex Claremont-Diaz is charismatic, idealistic and initially thinks Henry is a cossetted, entitled blue blood. There’s a well-worn enemies-turned-lovers trope which kicks off with Henry and Alex causing a scandal by pushing a giant wedding cake onto each other mid-argument at a royal wedding.
This is followed by several bromance photo-ops to pre-emptively repair the “special relationship”. In a nice little bit of political wish fulfilment Alex’s mother Ellen Claremont is the first female president, a Texan Democrat with a Latino husband. Soon enough, Henry’s suit-wearing formality thaws and he’s tearing Alex’s clothes off in a barn at a polo match. It’s perfectly fun and frothy and in many ways hits all the rom com beats you’d expect. But there’s more here, and not just because it addresses queer romance. The script is nuanced and funny. The romance is given plenty of time to flourish. The roadblocks feel substantial, not forced.
