A Trading Standards probe in South Lanarkshire revealed 21 in 70 premises visited sold e-cigs to underage youngsters amid worrying teen vaping craze.

One in three shops are selling vapes to underage kids, a shocking spot check crackdown has found. Test purchases in South Lanarkshire saw 21 out of 70 premises illegally selling e-cigs to under-18s, with all the offending retailers fined.

It comes as the Daily Record’s ‘Bin The Vapes’ campaign to outlaw single-use gadgets on environmental and kids’ health grounds won a major victory with a crackdown announced this week. Unveiling this year’s Programme for Government, First Minister Humza Yousaf warned youth vaping had become “common” - and launched plans to consult Scots on a disposables ban.

“Nonetheless, vapes are covered by the same trading laws as tobacco or alcohol and can’t be sold to anyone under the age of 18. And after such concerning results we will be stepping up efforts to support sellers with advice and continue to take enforcement action where they break the law. Top news stories today “Unfortunately, the bright packaging, colours and flavours, as well as the easy availability of single-use vapes in particular, has only worsened that trend. Worse still is that the children and often their parents mistakenly believe that vapes are a harmless alternative to smoking."
