She currently has temporary leave to remain and is on a 10-year route towards being granted indefinite leave to remain. Employers can check if an individual has the right to work in the UK via on online Government service when that individual does not hold physical proof of their status.prospective employers have asked her to provide a reference code from the Home Office, which she has not been given.
Josephine Whitaker-Yilmaz, Policy and Public Affairs Manager for the charity Praxis, which has been supporting Ms Kouyate, said that the charity is aware of other people not being given a code to prove their right to work while renewing their visa. “It’s something you would have thought the Home Office might have learned some lessons from around the Windrush scandal, the fact that not having a physical proof of status or indeed any proof of status can create huge problems,” she said.
