Every preseason, training staffs from NHL clubs go through dry runs for several potential major medical emergencies. These practices have saved the lives of players such as Rich Peverley and Jay Bouwmeester, who suffered cardiac episodes during games.
’s left wrist was cut by a Pat Maroon skate blade on Nov. 8, there were a lot of shocked and scared people in the stands and on both benches. They had rehearsed for it.
The two staffs had met before the game, like medical teams do every game, to go over what-ifs. They communicated by walkie-talkie, which aren’t mandatory but are used by many teams. “A lot of people look at it and think, ‘OK, athletic trainers are focused on taping and stretching. But the most important part is that emergency response, and that’s something we take a lot of time in preparing for, try to educate and put yourself in the best situation to act.”In November 2005, after the Fischer heart attack, the NHL made it mandatory that physicians be within 50 feet of the bench. Same for a defibrillator.
“When I started … it was just myself and a massage therapist in ’95 to finally an assistant trainer. Right now, there’s probably eight or nine members of the medical staff for the Red Wings and most NHL teams.”
