Rocketing to the top of the leaderboard this weekend were Hamza and Jowita with their exceptional Salsa to 'Ecuador'
is in the bottom two this week, I will boycott. I may have broken impartiality rules by voting for her. Twice.Meanwhile, the woman I’d previously dismissed as blandly brilliant, Molly, strutted onto the stage like the world’s fiercest flapper and pulled off a cha-cha so drenched in sass and poise I put down my mint tea. It sent her straight to the top of the table, albeit briefly thanks to Fleur and Hamza. Carlos’s choreography is starting to bring out the best in her.
The rest of the show required high absorbency tissues as one celebrity after another sent lips wobbling with their emotional battles. Will looked and sounded so ill, I was impressed that he could dance at all. You could almost smell the Lemsip as he gamely guided Nancy around the floor, but the judges went for his legs and posture. The poor lad should have been horizontal in bed, not propped up and forced to gyrate in sequins.
Another kind of emotional journey was happening during Matt’s jive, not that you could tell. He was, once again, dressed in pretty much the same outfit he wears every week. It almost makes me suspect he’s laying down the law with the costume department. The top half of his body was fully committed, but his legs seemed heavy as he stomped around the floor. He’s the underdog now. You could see that from the way his fellow contestants stood and applauded him.
But it was the more emotional routines that stayed in the memory this week. Jayde lifting Karen in a froth of gossamer netting, the post-dance-off determination of Fleur gancho-ing for her life and Craig’s simple but effective “better” when critiquing Tony’s American Smooth. So many feelings. Just before, I’d caught up with episode four of the new season of Ghosts and thought I had no more tears left to cry.
