💬 “They say we’re bandits and evil people, but it’s not true,” says Leyla* 🔎 The Pankisi Gorge in Georgia has been used by Moscow as an example of the need for Russian influence to maintain stability across the Caucasus region
“There was protest from the men when we first set up the council,” she says, “but now we sit around the table with them, and recently we appointed the first female mayor of a Pankisi village.”
Since 2016, when a law that banned marriage before the age of 18 was introduced across Pankisi as a result of protests by Women’s Council members, the community has since begun aligning local laws to those of Georgia. “Like any community, we still have disputes, and often these are the result of the variety of beliefs that you find here. There are people who are traditional Muslims, those who prefer Sharia law, and some who are neither. But these interactions are a good thing, and we encourage it.”
Such freedoms and opportunities extend to Pankisi’s children. On the outskirts of Duisi, children attend English-language classes held at the Roddy Scott Foundation, which was set up in 2008 by the family of a British journalist who died reporting on the Chechen war. The US embassy now also provides funding.
