Many of Manchester's buildings and streets echo with tales of macabre and horrific events from the past
Of the many historic buildings and streets in Manchester, some echo with tales of a past that is truly unsettling, even terrifying.
Just after nine o'clock in the morning on May 16, 1862, William Robert Taylor, accompanied by his wife, Martha, arrived at the offices of Evan Mellor in the King Street area of the city centre. Welcomed in by Mr Mellor's son, they sat down and waited patiently for him to return from his errands. He went up to find a blood soaked Mr Mellor lying on his back on the landing. He had been stabbed repeatedly in the chest.
Searching his prisoner, the sergeant found three keys. But nothing could prepare the officer for what he would find on the other side of those doors they would open.William Taylor and his family lived in a shop in the Strangeways area that he rented from his victim, Evan Mellor. With the keys taken from the arrested man, two police officers let themselves into the building. Making their way upstairs to the back bedroom they turned the lock with the smallest key.
"We are six, but one at Harpurhey lies, and thither our bodies take. Mellor and Sons are our cruel murderers, but God and our loving parents will avenge us. Love rules here. We are all going to our sister to part no more."On the inside of the note the children's names and ages were written: Mary Anna Taylor, 12; Anna Maria Taylor, eight; William Robert Taylor, five-years old.
Through newspaper reports of court proceedings in the following weeks and months, it appears the death of his daughter had preyed upon William Taylor's mind. He had made an application to the estate agent for £50 compensation but Mr Mellor refused, which is said to have "greatly irritated' Mr Taylor.
