The Tories are alienating entrepreneurs, working people and Eurosceptics. So who are they appealing to?
Imagine it! Politicians, in a democracy, elected by the people and engaged in a race to impress them in time for the next election, doing things because voters might like them. It shouldn’t be a surprise. Yet somehow it seems to be. The basic building blocks of a campaign in a democracy are to turn out as many people as possible who are already in your camp and win over as many as possible of those who are open to persuasion. What are the Tories doing to retain the former and attract the latter?
The new Government is, so far, rather inscrutable by this measure. On numerous fronts, there are negative signs, the cancellation of good news, or at least a lack of a pitch for potential components of the electoral coalition:; for aspiring homeowners; for supporters of higher defence spending; for tax cutters; for energy independence advocates; and for innovators who want to see regulation modernised, for example.
