Merkland Street opened back in 1896 as part of the original Subway line.

Holding the title of the world’s third oldest metro system, Glasgow’s Subway network has spent more years shooglin’ Glasgow rear ends than the Paris Metropolitan, the New York subway and the Madrid metro.

That station is Merkland Street, which opened back in 1896 as part of the original Subway line before closing on May 21, 1977 when the system shut down for its much-needed modernisation. The old station, which had an island platform, was situated around 50 metres from where the modern entrance to Partick Station is and which opened as a Subway station in 1980.

According to Subterranea Brittanica, the “scars” of the bomb attack are still evident today, “as south of Partick station, the cast iron tunnels change to partly brick, marking the site of the bomb explosion”.
