It is a symbol of the legacy of popular cartoonist Bud Neill.
The statue of Lobey Dosser was unveiled to the public on Woodlands Road in 1992, a concept designed by Glasgow artist Ranald MacColl and sculpted by students Tony Morrow and Nick Gillon.
Lobey Dosser was one of Neill’s most famous characters, and in the 1940s and 1950s, his adventures were told in a series of cartoons in the Evening Times. Lobey was the sheriff of the fictional Western village Calton Creek, named after the area of Glasgow, and together he and El Fideldo – the “only two-legged horse in the West” – strove to protect its citizens from and his arch nemesis Rank Bajin, who was a “rank bad yin”.
After the comic strip in the paper ended, demand was still high for the next Lobey Dosser tale, and the cartoons were published in small booklets that cost a shilling.
