But Deebo, even without the “C” on his jersey, has been a team leader for years now, underlined by his incredible 2021 season and all the younger players who look up to him. He isn’t a big talker in the 49ers’ locker room, but a look or a few quick words from Deebo mean a lot on any issue.
“It meant a lot,” Deebo said the day he was named a captain. “It’s pretty big. It just shows that the hard work and stuff I put in this offseason, for the players to vote me as a captain is real big.”said that Deebo was disappointed he didn’t get the honor last season, which made this vote even more significant for him. Left unsaid: Though Deebo was close to getting the captain’s nod last year, he likely missed out because of that weird offseason and uninspiring training camp.
It wasn’t that Deebo had a terrible campaign. But starting with a less-than-great offseason of workouts while Deebo was waiting out the trade request and negotiation, the 2022 season wasn’t his best.
You could sense that Deebo was basically challenging himself by being so self-critical. After saying it publicly, he had to back it up by putting in the offseason work, showing up to training camp in great shape and blasting into the 2023 season. Which is what happened, and led to Shanahan joking at the start of camp: “Never had a grown man send me so many pictures with his shirt off, but it looks good. I can tell he put the work in.
“It’s cool, too, because I don’t want to say it adds pressure to you, but it definitely, ‘Hey, you’re a captain for multiple reasons.’ You need to show up every single day and you need to be able to help guys, guide guys, give guys advice. Or if you’re not much of a talker, just show ’em how to do it every single day. He does that, and he’s been great at that this whole season. Just very happy for him because it’s a very, very cool thing to get.”“As he should be,” Kittle said.
The 49ers don’t really need to turn into a Deebo-only offense anymore. But they sure love to turn to him in specific moments and see him bulldoze through linebackers and safeties. They love that his physicality defines their offense. And they really love that he’s made sure he’s in the best condition possible to do all of those things again.
