Close to Neath, on the outskirts of Swansea, what was once one of the largest abbeys in Wales, established in 1129, also makes an appearance in the new series. Since the series wrapped, it is once again surrounded by mountain bikers heading into the Afan Valley. Another set of ruins in Merthyr Mawr also features: the Iron Age hillfort – Chapel Hill Camp – in the grounds of 19th-century Merthyr Mawr House, on the banks of the River Ogmore.protagonists are often found in the forest as they pursue their quest. Scenes were shot in the Taf Fechan Forest near Merthyr Tydfil, which harbours conifers and the river of the same name, and the Blaen y Glyn waterfall.
In the upper Swansea valley, the abandoned quarrying village of Penwyllt also features, alongside the nearby limestone cave systems. Dan-yr-Ogof National Showcaves is an easy-to-explore introduction to the pocked landscape.
Further west, near Port Talbot, Margam Country Park sprawls across 1,000 acres of parkland that are home to the longest orangery in Britain and Victorian mansion house, as well as deer and ornamental gardens through which the troupe journeys.
