It was reassuring to see that the G7 devoted a chunk of its summit conclusions to a commitment to working together on controlling artificial intelligence

. But Western leaders also discussed one issue for the first time – the opportunities and threats created by artificial intelligence.

Since the G7 last met in June 2022, the mind-blowing pace of AI development has started to force the topic on to political agendas.. There are also concerns over the risk AI poses to young people who “can’t negotiate the world very well”. Some scientists believe that “artificial general intelligence” – that is, the ability of a computer to “think” at the same level as a human or higher – is only a couple of decades away, or even closer.

This could create truly remarkable gains for mankind, or it could be catastrophic, up to and including the extinction of human life altogether. One thing is clear – before we reach this science-fiction future, rigorous regulation is required to maximise the chances of positive outcomes, and it must be globally co-ordinated.

It was reassuring to see that the G7 devoted a chunk of its summit conclusions to a commitment to working together on AI regulation. And Rishi Sunak is surely right that the UK can punch above its weight here, given our proud record of scientific success.
