The attack in that social media post makes the mistake of so many furious people; assuming the audience thinks exactly like them
Break it gently to the tweet miscreant, but many of those prosperous twitchers who donate to the laudable cause of protecting our feathered population and their habitats are natural Conservative voters.
It is not at all wrong for the RSPB to campaign when environmental policy changes because the Government changes tack.in areas earmarked for house building strike Speight and many others as a betrayal of earlier pledges. The society also has a history of protest – founded partly in opposition to the killing of birds for plumage to feature in Edwardian hats.
But the personal attack in that social media post makes the mistake of so many furious people; namely, assuming that the audience they are addressing think exactly like them. In the case of the RSPB’s angry tweets person, the assumption is that Tories are inherently liars . But Campbell, for all his blowhard tendencies, is a former spin-doctor turned polemicist. He is free to wear his bias on his sleeve. A charity is not.
Beneath all this lies a tension which will persist even if the Tories are on a flight path out of power. There is, after all, a cross-party push for house building which will inevitably interfere with bird habitat at some point. It is a long-standing tension.
