Senior civil servant Sue Gray, who has quit the Cabinet Office to take up a role as Sir Keir Starmer’s chief of staff
The implicit assumption is that Gray must personally be aligned with Labour’s mission in order to accept a role as Sir Keir Starmer’s chief of staff. The disagreement arises over whether, in taking this job with the Opposition, she undermines the integrity of her recent actions as the civil service’s ethics chief during the current Conservative administration.
The Conservative MP went further in her defence of Gray, insisting: “She has done the job she was asked to do [investigating Partygate]. I think you all need to get a better understanding of impartiality and professionalism.” Fellow Red Waller Mark Jenkinson, meanwhile, cast doubt over her ability to maintain a firewall between her former job and upcoming role. Describing the ex-mandarin as having had “tentacles into a lot of what we’ve done and in-depth knowledge of what we plan to do”, he implied she might exploit the privileged information she had gleaned about the Conservative government for political ends while working for the Labour leader.
