The monthly energy bill was said at one point to be £93,000

HMRC bosses have explained the reason its vast Unity Square office block was once again lit up well into the night. A photo shared with Nottinghamshire Live had shown the towering building, located opposite Nottingham Railway Station, illuminating the city centre skyline on Friday .

Clarifying the reason for the latest incident, HMRC officials said: "The lights were put into emergency mode for a training exercise on Friday. Unfortunately, the lights have not gone back to normal and we’re urgently working with our contractors to fix the issue.”Until the issue is resolved the building will continue to be lit at night. Kate Rimmer, who lives in Wilford, said: "They definitely need to stop leaving all the lights on at night. It's wasting taxpayers' money.

John Jones, from Leicester, had a similar view: "It's ridiculous them leaving it on all night. A lot of other buildings are similar. I notice it, like I do with street lights. It seems silly, unnecessary lighting. There's light pollution everywhere. You can't even see the sky."
