Leftovers that used to end up in the bin at a Notts pub are now being sold to customers for just £4 when the carvery closes. The perfectly edible meat and vegetables are being sold off at a bargain price by The Vale in Woodthorpe to both reduce food waste and help locals who may be struggling to pay the full price.
To eat in the pub, on the corner of Mansfield Road and Thackerays Lane, roasts normally cost between £7.95 and £9.95 on a weekday and £9.50 and £12.95 on Sundays. Jit said the number of people eating a roast in the pub had dropped since the pandemic but customers are hungrier than ever before. "Because of the cost of living crisis our numbers have gone down but we are still doing the same amount of veg. People are taking more food.
"I just bought some cartons off eBay, tried it and everybody loves it. They order on the app the day before because they sell out so quick. Stacy Sharp, who lives in Arnold, has tried one of the Too Good to Go carveries. She said: "The food quality was amazing and tastes beautiful. It was a good price for the amount of food and I was very happy. I will definitely use it again. I would recommend using if on a budget. One portion will serve two. I tried to eat it all myself but ended up with a Christmas Day belly."
Since taking over The Vale, Jit has introduced a charity quiz on Thursday nights, which has raised over £3,000 so far. The lion's share has been donated to the nearby food bank at the Baptist church but donations have also gone to Lymphoma Action, Hayward House hospice and a Ukrainian charity,
