In the 'overlooked' town being promised £20m by Rishi Sunak, Helena Vesty speaks to residents who have felt the sting of hollow pre-election promises - and won't be moved again
‘It’s a carrot dangling on a stick’, ‘people are wise to it now’. At the very moment it appears to have been revealed that the Manchester leg of HS2 will be axed after years of turmoil, Greater Manchester residents promised yet more investment do not want to hear it.
According to the government it is set to be used on local priorities such as reviving high streets, tackling anti-social behaviour, improving transport, boosting visitor numbers and growing the local economy. “It looks shabby, lots of the units have closed and those left are nearly all pound shops. It’s a place that’s been forgotten about.
“I lived in London for a few years and came back and have just seen how neglected a place like this is. Then things like HS2 show us getting cut off more. “Levelling Up announcements from this government are usually chaotic and beset by delays” Ms Rayner continued. “Our experience is that funding pledged isn't always delivered and my constituents are still paying a Tory premium for the last 13 years.”
“I’ve spent a lot of time in London because I have family down there and this place always feels forgotten about by comparison. Look at the money Rishi Sunak has got, he cannot understand what we’re going through. The funding – should it ever arrive – could indeed be of use if spent on the right things, agree the residents. Harriet and Sean Davies, aged 30 and 31, have both worked within the NHS.
“We could do with more funding for elderly people and easier access, even something like a coffee morning to help people be more sociable.”
